The annual Tertiary Silat Competition was held at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Sports Hall on Sunday, 14 June 2009. The senior members went through an intensive training program for the past one year, at the same time prepared the juniors for this prestigious competition.

On the competition day, the NTU sports hall rocked with thunderous cheers by various supporters from the participating institutions. The sounds of the kompang and the voices of the RP supporters motivated the team to do their best.

It was a tough journey for most of the participants in the first few rounds as they had to compete against accomplished opponents that have established themselves in past competitions. Nevertheless, the RP team was never intimidated by them but determined to outperform their opponents.

It was a fruitful day when the team clinched 4 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals in the championship. In addition, the RP Silat team was crowned the title of “Overall Artistic Champions” with 3 gold medallists from the artistic category.

Before the closing of the competition, the students were invited to compete against Temasek Poly and were honoured to perform alongside with guest-of-honor, Mr Abdullah Shafiie, President of the Singapore Silat Federation.

The RP Silat team, Selatra team would like to thank all our supporters who were present for the competition. Our achievements in this event have greatly motivated and boosted the morale of our IG members. We hope to scale even greater heights next year and do our part in making RP proud!

Republic Polytechnic, Saturday, 30th May.

The RP Rugby Contact IG sent a team of 15 players to compete in the 2nd round of the U20 M1 School Rugby series 10s tournament and has emerged victorious!

The 10s tournament is a totally different game as it only allows only 10 players per team to be on the field, as compared to the traditional 15. Each match lasts only 10mins, but every minute of the game proved to be more intensive. RP was in Group A, alongside Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Combined ITE.

The guys were outstanding as they started with a convincing win against a very strong combined ITE side, followed by a tough draw against Ngee Ann Polytechnic in the second game. This puts RP at the top of the group’s table and Team RP advanced to the Cup finals. Undeterred by the status of Temasek Polytechnic as the POL-ITE Games 2008 champions, RP scored a 15-0 win in the final and was crownedU20 M1 Tens Tournament Champions.

The tournament provided a platform for the team to measure themselves against the schools competing in POL-ITE Games Rugby 09/10 as all 6 institutions participated in the tournament. Having defeated the 08/09 champion, Temasek Polytechnic, the team is very motivated and looks forward to this season’s POL-ITE Games, where RP plays host to the rugby games for the first time. Home ground advantage would be pivotal in the team’s pursuit of their first ever medal in the POL-ITE Games.

The Republic Polytechnic’s Social Dance Latin Performance Team - ‘Regal Passionates’ and Salsa Team- ‘Danza Con Pasion’ came in 1st and 3rd place respectively for the “Showdance” category at the 10th Stardust Dancesport Grand Prix Competition 2009! The inaugural annual dance competition was held at the Orchid Country Club on Sunday, 21 June 2009.

Presented by Louis and Catherine Dance Studio, Stardust 2009 was endorsed by the Singapore Ballroom Dance Teacher’s Association (Member of World Dance Council, Asia Pacific Dance and Dance Sport Council and Asian Dance council). The event congregated competitors from all over the world – Italy, China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Mongolia, Thailand, The Philippines, Malaysia, and Hong Kong; in a dance cultural exchange of techniques and stunts with copious passionate dance enthusiasts from renowned dance institutions in Singapore.

That evening, the “Showdance” category stole the audience’s hearts away with RP’s Latin Performance Team’s fusion of Latin Rhumba, Cha Cha and Jive, with a touch of sassy demeanor; and the Salsa Team, of exhilarating dance stunts of flips and lifts that left the audience gasping for more in array of loud applause.

Although faced with strong competition from very established competitors of the same category, RP’s ‘Regale Passionates’ and ‘Danza Con Pasion’ managed to steal the limelight and were announced as the Champions! Months of training certainly paid off at that crowning moment!

Congratulations RP’s Social Dance IG!
